Two Delaware women have been indicted on hate crimes for confronting Trump supporters, including a 7-year-old boy and his mother, outside the Democratic National Convention.
Olivia Winslow and Camryn Amy, both 21, were indicted by a New Castle County grand jury on charges of felony charges of robbery, conspiracy and hate crimes and a misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a child, the Delaware News Journalreported Tuesday. Amy also was indicted on misdemeanor charges of assaulting a man who tried to retrieve the hat, attempting to assault the boy’s mother and offensive touching of the boy.
“Violence in any form is unacceptable, but harming another person — let alone a child — because of the expression of their views betrays the principles on which our country was founded,” Delaware Attorney General Kathleen Jennings said in a statement.
“Free speech, free assembly, and free expression are sacred, no matter whether we agree with the opinions expressed, and especially when we don’t.”
Viral video showed Winslow and Amy damaging signs that belonged to a group of Trump supporters protesting former Vice President Joe Biden, who would accept the Democratic nomination for president just a few steps away that night. At one point, a young boy can be seen chasing the two after they picked a red “Make America Great Again” hat up off the ground.
“That’s somebody else’s hat,” he says.
Amy also seemingly punched a man who tried to get the hat back later in the video.
