Calling All Peace Advocates: Sign up for the June 18th Moral March on Washington

“If you got gray hair, suit up one more time! If you are middle aged and if you’re young, pay your debt for living on somebody else’s sacrifices. Because it’s time!”

It is time for a “moral revival” in the United States. Above, Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, co-leader of the Poor People’s Campaign, is calling on folks at the launch of the Poor People’s and Low-Wage Workers’ Assembly to come to Washington DC on June 18, 2022 for the Moral March on Washington. It is time to come together from across the United States to demonstrate our power for peace and justice.

In 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. created the Poor People’s Campaign to unite poor and impacted people from all corners of the United States in the fight for freedom and justice. Today, the campaign continues to uplift and engage people to address what it calls the “five interlocking evils”: systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, militarism and the war economy, and the distorted moral narrative of religious nationalism. On June 18th, tens of thousands of people will gather in DC with the Poor People’s Campaign to demand an end to the marginalization of the 140 million poor and low-income people in our nation, and to challenge the lie of scarcity in the midst of our country’s abundance.

At Massachusetts Peace Action, we work to foster just and peaceful US foreign policy. Central to this goal is an end to militarism and redistribution of the United States’ plentiful resources away from war and towards human and environmental needs. Joining the Poor People’s Campaign on June 18th will be an opportunity to build our collective power and make our demands clear alongside thousands of others. Massachusetts Peace Action alone cannot defeat US militarism, but we are not alone, and June 18th is our unprecedented chance to unite our struggle for redistribution of the bloated Pentagon budget with an intersectional national movement.

Over the past few months, Massachusetts Peace Action staff and members have been outreaching to organizations across Massachusetts, connecting groups to the Poor People’s Campaign and registering folks to be a part of the Moral March on Washington. Now it is time to register ourselves. Massachusetts Peace Action and the Poor People’s Campaign goals are synonymous; an end to US militarism would free up the resources needed to meet the human needs of every person in the United States. Redistribution of military funding and an end to the military-industrial complex are central to the Poor People’s Campaign’s policy priorities. We cannot miss this unprecedented opportunity to connect US military spending with wealth inequality and domestic injustices, while also building power and connections that will carry us through the work we have ahead.

This is why we are asking you to join us on June 18th to be part of the Moral March on Washington. A chance like this to decry US militarism alongside tens of thousands of people, and to unite anti-militarism efforts with thousands of groups focused on injustice within the United States, is rare. But it is happening on June 18th, and it is important that we in the peace movement show up.

Massachusetts Peace Action staff, interns, and members are already signed up to travel to Washington DC on June 18th by bus. Campaign buses will be leaving from more than 15 cities and towns in Massachusetts for a one day trip to join the Moral March on Washington.

At Massachusetts Peace Action, we know that there is not a scarcity of resources in the United States, simply poor prioritization of our country’s wealth. Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II so perfectly says, “We’re spending too much money trying to blow up the world, rather than save the world. This nation needs a heart transplant, it’s time to have a meeting. Are you all ready for the meeting?”
