Abstract
Limited research has focused on the prevalence and context of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among Native Americans. At the same time, as Native Americans have experienced significant historical trauma and oppression spanning generations, there is reason to believe that childhood adversity is differentially concentrated among Native persons. This chapter begins by reviewing historical trauma and oppression experiences by Native Americans and the associated, lasting impacts on Native communities. Next, we frame these experiences as ACEs for Native people. Then, the existing research regarding ACEs among Native Americans is presented, and limitations are outlined. Finally, a discussion of evidence-based strategies for preventing and intervening on ACEs among Native American people and Native communities is provided.
