Scientists discover protein that can reverse brain aging effects

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) has identified a key protein linked to cognitive decline in aging, particularly within the hippocampus, a brain region crucial for learning and memory. The protein in question, FTL1, exhibited increased levels in older mice compared to their younger counterparts.

In their investigation, the researchers examined the changes in genes and proteins in the hippocampus over time in mice. They discovered that older mice not only had elevated levels of FTL1 but also demonstrated reduced connectivity between brain cells and impaired cognitive functions. Notably, when FTL1 levels were artificially increased in young mice, their brains and behaviors began to mirror those of older mice.

Laboratory experiments revealed that nerve cells engineered to produce high amounts of FTL1 developed simpler, one-armed neurites, as opposed to the typical branching structures associated with healthy cells. However, when FTL1 levels were decreased in older mice, the animals showed significant improvements. They regained neural connectivity and performed better on memory tests, leading senior author Dr. Saul Villeda to describe the findings as a “reversal of impairments.”

Additionally, the study noted that elevated FTL1 levels in older mice contributed to a slowdown in cellular metabolism within the hippocampus. Treatment with a compound that stimulated metabolism appeared to counteract these effects.

The researchers express optimism that their findings could pave the way for potential therapies aimed at mitigating the detrimental impacts of FTL1 on brain aging. Their work underscores a developing understanding of the biological processes underlying aging, offering hope for future advancements in this field. The study is published in the journal Nature Aging.
