Regular exercise may change heart-control nerves

Recent research published in “Autonomic Neuroscience: Basic & Clinical” suggests that aerobic exercise may induce structural changes in the nervous system, specifically affecting the stellate ganglia—clusters of nerves in the neck that regulate heart activity. This study, conducted on Wistar rats, found differing adaptations in the right and left stellate ganglia following a 10-week moderate treadmill training program.

The trained rats exhibited a significant increase in neuron count on the right side, while the left side showed fewer neurons but larger neuron sizes. This asymmetrical response indicates that aerobic exercise may influence the autonomic nervous system in more complex ways than previously understood. Researchers measured total neuron count, average neuron volume, and overall ganglion size to assess these changes.

The findings revealed that trained rats had a lower heart rate—280 beats per minute compared to 314 in untrained rats—without significant changes in blood pressure. The study highlights that moderate aerobic exercise reshapes nerve centers controlling heart function, challenging the notion that such adaptations are uniform across the body.

Lead author Augusto Coppi emphasized the potential clinical implications of these findings, suggesting that understanding side-specific adaptations could enhance nerve-targeted therapies for conditions like arrhythmias. However, Coppi cautioned that further research, particularly human studies, is necessary to verify these results and their applicability in clinical settings.

Experts, including Dr. Raj Dasgupta, noted the study’s potential to refine treatment approaches for heart conditions, advocating for continued aerobic exercise as a beneficial practice for heart health. While the findings are intriguing, they underscore the need for additional investigation before any significant changes to medical protocols can be implemented.
