NYPD Report: Jewish New Yorkers Were the Most Targeted Minority Group in First Half of 2026

A new report from the New York City Police Department found that Jewish New Yorkers were the most frequently targeted minority group in hate crime incidents during the first six months of 2026.

According to the NYPD’s biannual crime data, the department recorded 178 anti-Jewish hate crimes from January through June. The figure comes amid continued concern from Jewish community leaders over rising antisemitism in the city, particularly following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel and the ongoing war in Gaza.

The report also showed that anti-Muslim hate crimes increased during the same period, rising from 14 incidents in the first half of 2025 to 21 in the first half of 2026. Meanwhile, hate crimes targeting Asian, Black, and white New Yorkers declined, and ethnicity-related hate crimes dropped by 50 percent.

While overall crime in New York City has continued to fall, including reductions in shootings, murders, and major crimes, the data suggests that antisemitic incidents remain a persistent concern. Several recent attacks and acts of vandalism have targeted visibly Jewish New Yorkers, including Orthodox Jewish residents and individuals wearing religious symbols such as kippahs.

Jewish organizations and community advocates have called for stronger action to address antisemitism, improve public safety, and ensure that hate crime enforcement remains a priority. The latest NYPD figures have also renewed broader debate over how city officials should respond to anti-Jewish harassment, anti-Israel demonstrations, and incidents in which political rhetoric crosses into antisemitism.

The report underscores the continued need for vigilance, community protection, and a firm response to all forms of hate targeting New York City’s diverse communities.
