Federal Officials Investigate Multiple Foodborne Illness Outbreaks
Taylor Farms has voluntarily recalled shredded iceberg lettuce as federal healthofficials investigate whether the product is connected to an ongoing Cyclospora outbreak. The inquiry is part of a broader set of foodborne illness investigations listed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
As of July 22, the FDA listed 12 ongoing outbreaks: four involving Cyclospora, three Salmonella, two E. coli, two Listeria monocytogenes, and one Clostridium botulinum outbreak associated with powdered infant formula. The suspected food source remained unidentified in eight investigations.
Cyclospora cases have been reported across 41 states, with the outbreak concentrated in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Michigan reported more than 9,200 cases and at least 160 hospitalizations, while Ohio reported more than 2,500 cases. A newly listed Cyclospora investigation involved 72 cases and no identified product.
Among the Salmonella investigations, Midwest Poultry Services recalled eggs sold under several brand names after an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis. Sources had not been identified for separate Salmonella Javiana and Salmonella Oranienburg outbreaks.
A recall of GreenWise frozen organic blueberries followed an E. coli O145:H28 investigation. Another E. coli outbreak remained under investigation. Cheese products sold under the La Colonia and Selectos Latinos brands were recalled in connection with one Listeria outbreak, while the source of another remained unknown. Nara Organics also recalled powdered infant formula during an infant botulism investigation.
The unresolved investigations have prompted questions about the capacity of federal agencies following funding and staffing reductions, including cuts affecting the CDC’s FoodNet program. No direct causal link between those reductions and the outbreaks has been established. Health authorities continue traceback, testing, and recall efforts while seeking to identify remaining sources and limit further illnesses. Consumers are advised to follow recall notices and food-safety guidance while federal and state investigations continue nationwide.
