Born in Stockholm, Sweden, and raised in Queens, New York, Art Spiegelman studied cartooning at Manhattan’s High School of Art and Design. For over two decades he created novelty cards and stickers for Topps Gum Company, while contributing cartoons to underground comix under a variety of pen names. In 1992 he received a special Pulitzer for his ground-breaking graphic novel based on the Holocaust experiences of his parents, Maus: A Survivor’s Tale.
