Today Cambodia commemorates one of the most significant moments in its modern history – the fall of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime. A day that marks the end of nearly four years of terror and suffering under a regime that sought to erase the Cambodian identity, culture, and history. The memories of that dark period, when an estimated 1.7 million lives were lost, are still etched in the minds of survivors who lived through unspeakable horrors. Yet, January 7 also symbolises the triumph of resilience, hope, and the restoration of peace in the country.

Khmer Times pays tribute to the countless lives affected by the Khmer Rouge regime and the resilience of those who survived its brutalities. Inside, we highlight powerful first-hand accounts from Khmer Rouge survivors, who recount their harrowing final days under the regime, shedding light on the painful memories of their last hours under the Khmer Rouge’s iron grip. These survivors share their unique experiences of liberation, their mixed feelings of relief and grief, and how they have spent decades rebuilding their lives, families, and communities in the aftermath. Their testimony underscores the importance of remembering the victims and survivors of the Khmer Rouge, acknowledging their suffering, and recognising the steps Cambodia has taken toward reconciliation and justice.

In addition to these personal narratives, we are honoured to feature a special write-up by Chhang Youk, the renowned director of the Documentation Centre of Cambodia (DC-Cam), and a tireless advocate for justice and truth. A recipient of the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award, Youk has dedicated his life to preserving the history of the Khmer Rouge period, documenting the stories of survivors, and educating future generations on the atrocities of that time. His words in this edition are a reminder of the importance of confronting the past and ensuring that such horrors are never repeated.

On this solemn day, we also remember all those who lost their lives during the Khmer Rouge era – the parents, children, friends, and countless individuals who were victims of an ideology that sought to destroy an entire nation. As we honour their memory, let us also reflect on the lessons of history and the enduring need to value peace, unity, and tolerance. It is our shared responsibility to ensure that the atrocities of the past are never repeated and that we devote ourselves to building a world where such genocidal regimes cannot take root. Let today be a reminder that peace is the greatest gift we can offer to those who endured the darkest days of Cambodia’s history.
