The report attributes this alarming shift to significant cuts in global health funding from major donors, including the United States. Bill Gates, chair of the Gates Foundation, emphasized the contradiction of wealth growth alongside rising mortality rates among the world’s poorest children, calling for renewed investment in global health initiatives. Gates’ foundation aims to halve the current childhood mortality rate of 4.8 million deaths annually within the next two decades, but he notes that increased mortality undermines these efforts.
Recent spending reductions of nearly 27% by top global health donors risk perpetuating poverty and inadequate health systems, particularly in Africa. Gates argues that timely investments in maternal and child health can bolster economic growth in these regions.
