Exercise can be an effective treatment for depression and anxiety

A comprehensive review published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine indicates that cardiovascular exercises, including running, swimming, and dancing, can significantly alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. The analysis synthesized data from numerous studies, highlighting that exercise conducted in supervised or group environments tends to yield the most beneficial outcomes for individuals suffering from depression. For anxiety, shorter, less intense exercise programs lasting up to eight weeks were found to be particularly effective.

The prevalence of depression and anxiety is notable, affecting approximately one in four individuals globally, with heightened rates observed among young people and women. Previous research suggested that physical activity could rival traditional therapies such as medication and psychotherapy in managing symptoms. However, gaps remained regarding how various exercise factors—such as intensity, duration, and group dynamics—might influence outcomes across different age groups.

To address these uncertainties, researchers analyzed pooled data from randomized controlled trials, examining structured exercise programs intended to enhance both physical and mental  health. The review encompassed findings related to depression from 57 analyses involving nearly 58,000 participants, as well as 24 analyses concerning anxiety, which included over 19,000 individuals.

Results demonstrated that all types of exercise contributed positively to mental health. Aerobic exercise, particularly in group settings, was associated with the most significant improvements in depression, while a variety of exercise formats—including mind-body practices—showed medium-sized effects on anxiety. 

Despite some limitations in defining exercise parameters and the variability of data across life stages, researchers concluded that exercise can effectively reduce symptoms of both depression and anxiety. They emphasized the potential of exercise as a first-line intervention, especially in contexts where conventional mental health treatments may be limited.
