Musser, J. (1997). African American Women and Education: Marita Bonner’s Response to the “Talented Tenth”. Studies in Short Fiction, 34(1), 73.
Marita Bonner responded to the call for the “New Negro” during the Harlem Renaissance with short stories set in Chicago. She wrote in reaction to the need for an examination of the lives of characters who must cope with discrimination and illnesses particular to urban life. She did not include autobiographical elements in her writings of women characters who were independently strong.
