Garrett, B. A. (2013). Examining the Relationship of Cultural Identity and Historical Loss with an American Indian Sample on the MMPI-2-RF: A Preliminary Study. New Mexico State University.
Abstract
This preliminary study investigated the relationship of cultural identity and perceived historical loss on the MMPI-2-RF with a distinct non-clinical American Indian Tribal sample. Significant differences between the Tribal sample and the MMPI-2-RF normative standard occurred on 4 out of the 15 scales examined (RC1, RC2, RC3, and RC6). The participant’s reported high levels of White cultural identity and high levels of Tribal cultural identity did not relate to the differences in scores as hypothesized. However, analyses did reveal a significant relationship between reports of historical loss and RC6 (Ideas of Persecution) suggesting that thoughts of loss relate to higher than average scores on a MMPI-2-RF scale designed to measure persecutory beliefs. It is hoped this preliminary study provides an initial understanding regarding the use of the MMPI-2-RF with this Tribal group. Recommendations for future study are offered.
