Deep mourning descended upon the United Kingdom and much of the rest of the world after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, but in the former British colonies in Africa and Asia, feelings were mixed. India, oft dubbed a jewel in the British crown, maintained relative restraint, and its Prime Minister Narendra Modi eulogized the queen with great empathy. But could her death and the decline of the entire institution of the British monarchy enable India to free itself from its post-traumatic past and move onto a new era?
