The ICMGLT joins Dr. Helen Fine’s family and friends in mourning her passing on May 14, 2022. A pioneer in the field of genocide studies, Dr. Fine established the Institute for the Study of Genocide (IGS), then was one of the four co-founders and first president of the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS). Her landmark work, Accounting for Genocide (1979), received the American Sociological Association Sorokin Award and was cited as “a brilliantly original interpretation of a complex and singular process that has until now defied comprehensive social analysis.” Her writings and advocacy emphasized the importance of understanding and acknowledging the processes and state intentionality of carrying out genocide, providing the foundation for the study and prevention of genocide. Her legacy will thus not only influence and guided future scholars but it will promote human rights and help prevent future genocides and mass atrocities.
