RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – James Allen was sentenced on Wednesday, Jan. 14, to at least 4 years and 4 months to as much as 11 years in the Nevada Department of Corrections for domestic battery by strangulation, domestic battery, and assault constituting domestic violence with the use of a deadly weapon, according to the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office.

On the first count of felony domestic battery by strangulation, Allen received 24 to 60 months in prison to be served consecutively with the felony assault constituting domestic violence with the use of a deadly weapon count where he got 28 to 72 months.

Allen got 146 days with credit for time served for the misdemeanor domestic battery count.

“This conviction delivers justice for a survivor who endured horrific abuse and had the courage to come forward,” said District Attorney Chris Hicks after Allen was convicted in 2025. “Equally important is the compassion and courage shown by the citizen who reported the abuse, reminding us that awareness and action save lives.”

In October 2024, Reno Police Department officers responded to a report of a battery on a 32-year-old woman by Allen, her then boyfriend.

The woman’s work supervisor called police after she showed up with a black eye, swollen lips, and limited mobility.

The woman also claimed Allen threatened her life, according to a District Attorney’s Office news release from Oct. 21, 2025.

“While speaking with RPD, the victim reported the night prior, the defendant hit her in the face and strangled her until she blacked out,” the release said. “She also shared that Allen had placed a gun to her head and dry-fired it, threatening that the next time, it would be loaded.”

During the investigation, additional incidents of domestic abuse were uncovered, including the defendant breaking the woman’s arm in three places, prior black eyes, and occasions where Allen would force the victim into their bathtub, make her put her gun in her mouth, and tell her to kill herself, the release said.

They have a child whom the defendant would threaten to take away from her, the release said.

At trial, Deputy District Attorney Hannah Martinez highlighted the October 2024 abuse that resulted in the police report.

Martinez also focused on past physical abuse and how abusers gain power and control over their victims to cause them to remain in the relationship and not report violence.
