German court confirmed conviction and increased sentence for crimes against Yazidi women    In October 2021, the Higher Regional Court of Munich convicted Jennifer W. of crimes against humanity (enslavement) and war crimes (attempted murder) committed against a 5-year-old Yazidi girl and her mother in Fallujah, Iraq, in 2015. The court found that Jennifer W. travelled to Syria in late August 2014 and later married Iraqi national Taha A.-J. (separately on trial before the Higher Regional Court of Frankfurt, in the first genocide trial against an ISIS member). The couple moved to Fallujah, where they held captive a Yazidi woman and her 5-year-old daughter for approximately six weeks. The mother and daughter were subjected to almost daily beatings. In the summer of 2015, the girl was tied to the window grid outside the house, in 45 degrees Celsius heat, as a punishment for wetting the mattress. The couple left her there until she died.     The trial against Jennifer W. started in April 2019 and was the first trial for the crimes committed against Yazidi victims. Jennifer W. was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. In March this year, the German Federal Court of Justice overturned the sentence and referred the case back to the Higher Regional Court of Munich for a new decision. Earlier this week, the Court increased the sentence to 14 years imprisonment.    See also:    https://lnkd.in/eCZUtsdP    https://lnkd.in/eutcX53K
