Abstract

This chapter will explore variables that affect the duration of proceedings at the ICC and will give an overview of the latest internal developments aimed at tackling the problem. Finally, it will suggest additional practical steps to address the issue. But first, it will look into international human rights standards for the completion of criminal proceedings within a reasonable time. In particular, it will examine the four criteria developed in the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights (‘ECtHR’) for assessing if the length of domestic criminal proceedings is reasonable, and consider their relevance to the ICC proceedings.
