<text>Background Pediatric chronic pain (i.e., pain lasting ≥ 3 months) is prevalent, disabling, and costly. It spikes in adolescence, interrupts psychosocial development and functioning, and often co-occurs with mental health problems. Chronic pain often begins spontaneously without prior injuries and/or other disorders. Prospective longitudinal cohort studies following children from early childhood, prior to chronic pain onset, are needed to examine contributing factors, such as early pain experiences and mental health. Using data from a longitudinal community pregnancy cohort (All Our Families; AOF), the present study examined the associations between early developmental risk factors, including early childhood pain experiences and mental health symptoms, and the onset of pediatric chronic pain at ages 8 and 11 years. Methods Available longitudinal AOF data from child age 4 months, as well as 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, and 11 years, were used. Mothers reported their child’s pain experiences (e.g., hospitalizations, vaccinations, gut problems) at each timepoint from 4 months to 8 years, child chronic pain at age 8, and child mental health symptoms at ages 5 and 8 years. Children reported their chronic pain frequency and interference at age 11. Adaptive least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regressions were used to select predictor variables. Complete case analyses were complemented by multiple imputation using chained equation (MICE) models. Results Gut problems, emergency room visits, frequent pain complaints, and headaches at age 5 or earlier, as well as female sex, were associated with increased risk of maternal reported child chronic pain at age 8. Maternal reported chronic pain at age 8 was associated with higher levels of child-reported pain frequency and pain interferences at age 11. Boys self-reported lower levels of pain interference at age 11. Conclusions Some, but not all, painful experiences (e.g., gut problems, ER visits, pain complaints) in early life contribute to pediatric chronic pain onset and should be considered for screening and early intervention.</text>

Here we draw on 140 qualitative interviews with members of six professions from across Canada, who self-identify as Indigenous, Black or racialized, ethnic minority, disabled, 2SLGBTQ+, and/or from workingclass origins, to explore tensions between concepts of justice grounded in group-based oppressions and those grounded in individual egalitarianism. Though affirmative action and employment equity opened up opportunities, people were still left to fight for individual rights. This push to individualism was intensified by persistent hostile misperceptions that people are less qualified and in receipt of ‘unfair advantages.’ Through discursive misdirection, potential for transformative institutional change is undermined by liberal discourses of individualism and meritocracy</text>

<text><p>The death of a loved one is a profoundly impactful event, especially for youth who may lose a vital source of support during critical developmental stages. This study investigated the trajectories of complicated grief and multisystemic resilience resources among bereaved youth over a six-month period, considering the roles of emotion regulation strategies (expressive suppression and cognitive reappraisal), potentially traumatic events (PTEs), and various sociodemographic and loss-related factors. The present study utilized self-report data from treatment-seeking bereaved youth (N = 106). Parallel process latent growth curve modeling (PP- LGCM) was used to explore individual differences in grief and resilience trajectories. Post-hoc moderation analysis examined nuanced relationships identified through PP-LGCM. The results showed significant variability in initial levels and trajectories of both complicated grief symptoms and multisystemic resilience resources. Higher initial levels of complicated grief were associated with a slower rate of decline, suggesting persistent challenges for youth experiencing intense grief. Multisystemic resilience resources exhibited stability over time, with significant individual differences highlighting the complexity of resilience processes. Sociodemographic and loss-related variables, such as gender and time since loss, significantly predicted initial levels of complicated grief and multisystemic resilience resources, while closeness to the deceased was a significant predictor of the trajectory for multisystemic resilience resources. Emotion regulation strategies showed nuanced effects: expressive suppression approached significance as a predictor of resilience, and its interaction with cognitive reappraisal moderated the relationship between closeness to the deceased and resilience. These findings underscore the importance of personalized, multifaceted approaches in supporting bereaved youth, considering the diverse experiences and coping mechanisms that influence their adjustment post-loss. The study contributes to the literature by providing a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between grief, resilience resources, and emotion regulation, offering insights for clinical intervention and assessment to enhance bereavement support services</p></text>

199 years ago, in July 1825, the payment of a colonial indemnity known as the "independence debt" was imposed on Haiti by the former colonial power. This was a political and economic event with profound consequences for the future of the nation . The principle of this French debt is undoubtedly linked to the independence proclaimed by the people of Haiti 21 years earlier, in 1804. It is also linked to the general abolition of slavery, decreed even earlier, in 1793, in the then "French Part of Saint-Domingue," and confirmed in February 1794 by the French state, which was grappling with a revolution in metropolitan France. </text>

<text>A Son of Two Countries is a story of struggle for education. Born in 1946 in Rwanda under Belgian colonial rule, the author recounts his early education in Rwanda and later as a refugee in Tanzania. He was naturalized as a Tanzanian citizen in 1980 while doing his undergraduate studies at the University of Dar es Salaam. As he struggled to get education, the author was also grappling with his refugee status, with all the challenges that it entailed. The book gives insights into the contradictions of colonial and post-colonial education, as well as the authors reflections on education in Tanzania, given his long experience in the education sector in that country. Finally, we get some glimpses into the dual identity of the author as a Tanzanian citizen of Rwandan origin and how this shaped his relationship with the two countries he calls home. As he aptly puts it, Rwanda gave me my heart; Tanzania gave me my brain. I find it difficult to choose between my heart and my brain.</text>

<text>In Canada, more than 34,000 cases of sexual assault were reported to police in 2022, representing a 38% increase from 2017. However, it is estimated that only about 6% of sexual assaults are reported to police, making the actual number of sexual assaults in Canada much higher. In a recent study with my graduate student Lauren E. Thompson, we sought to understand jurors' perceptions of the credibility of sexual assault charges when there is a delay in reporting them. Specifically, we sought to understand how jurors' perceptions may be affected by delayed reporting (of two months, 10 years, 20 years) and the reasons for delayed reporting: lack of evidence, fear of retaliation or not wanting family to know. We used a mock-juror paradigm to assess perceptions of the victim and verdict.</text>

<text>Polytechnic College of Botolan is a sociocultural institution committed to providing quality
education. As its stakeholder, the researcher seeks to know the social factors influencing the
education of Indigenous peoples-students. This study used a multi- method approach of two sets of
respondents to collect and analyze data. Descriptive research design from Indigenous students
respondents abled the study to get Persistence and Continuity, External Threat, and Internal Threat as
factors influencing education. It found a correlation among them, seeing as the findings showed that
students are in school because they need education for a better life, so the distance from school does
not matter, and learning will not restrict their practices and beliefs. The social factors influencing
their education can only be overcome by pursuing education, contrary to why the other respondents,
Indigenous peoples-out-of-school youths, stopped attending school. Through narrative inquiry, the
analyzed data found that the reason for out-of-school youth is providing for the family as their
priority. The global pandemic cut off their financial source and caused them to get pregnant early,
which shifted their priority.</text>

<text>Every day, children are killed or injured in armed conflicts around the world. Thousands of children – including many babies – are now counted among the dead in the ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine: a blight on humanity.

In both cases, the main perpetrators of violence against children are states armed with nuclear weapons; and in any war involving one or more such states, there is an inherent risk of nuclear catastrophe.

As this report shows in compelling and often gut-wrenching detail, it is children who would suffer the most in the event of a nuclear attack against a city today.

The Impact of Nuclear Weapons on Children is a dire warning to the governments of all nuclear-armed states and to the global public that urgent action is needed to rid the world of nuclear weapons.

By sharing the stories of children killed or injured in the US atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and of children harmed by nuclear tests, we hope to honour them and ensure that no one else ever suffers as they have.</text>
