<text>Already challenged by the ravaging effects of colonisation over the past two centuries, Indigenous languages in Canada continue to face erasure due to the impacts of neo-liberalism and globalisation. Consequently, a high priority has been placed on the preservation of languages through ongoing research and language teaching. Here in Canada, despite the government’s financial and administrative aid for language awakening, reversing language loss has not yet been achieved. This chapter focuses on how applied theatre can support the cross-generational transfer of Indigenous languages and cultures as a community-based, participatory, and immersive tool to bring forward stories from page to stage and encourage discussion on critical social issues while speaking to the core elements of traditional culture such as storytelling, performance, and sharing knowledge. Moreover, this chapter discusses the urgency of utilising bottom-up and collaborative models of applied theatre via Indigenous and decolonising methodologies that work through reporting back to and sharing knowledge with (and for) Indigenous communities. The ethics of this anti-hierarchical and caring approach is equally significant in relation to the ethical foundations of Indigenous ontologies that contribute to the Indigenous people’s well-being and agency through respect, relevance, reciprocity, and responsibility.</text>

<text>Intragroup conflict, or lateral violence, in Indigenous and local communities is a heated topic. While there is some research on lateral violence in Indigenous communities in Australia, there is currently no such research in Sámi and local communities in Sweden. This chapter explores manifestations and underlying causes of lateral violence, using analysis based on cultural, structural, and extractive violence, and employs an international comparative approach to discuss situations in the Swedish part of Sápmi compared to those in Australia. The Sámi are the Indigenous People of Sweden. Many Sámi communities are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain traditional livelihoods such as reindeer herding. This creates external pressures for Sámi communities and can contribute to increased intragroup conflict. First Australian communities also experience external pressures caused by extractivism. This chapter theorizes that there is a strong connection between external pressures caused by extractive activities on Indigenous lands and lateral violence in Indigenous and local communities, and suggests that by addressing the causes of lateral violence, conflict transformation—where both the contextual and relational aspects of conflicts are emphasized—could be a way forward.</text>

<text>Law and neuroscience seem strange bedfellows. But the engagement of law with neuroscientific evidence was inevitable. For one thing, the effectiveness of legal systems in regulating behavior and meting out justice often depends on weighing evidence about how and why a person behaved as he or she did. And these are things that neuroscience can sometimes illuminate. For another, lawyers are ethically bound to champion their clients' interests. So they remain alert for new, relevant, or potentially persuasive information, such as neuroscience may at times offer, that could help to explain or contextualize behavior of their clients.</text>

<text>Memorialisation of those who died during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi has been an ongoing concern for both the Rwandan and non-Rwandan communities. The majority of the existing memorials were initially constructed by survivors supported by the local community, administration and other partners in response to the urgent need to bury the bodies of genocide victims. These sites have transformed over the years as memorial policies have codified and evolved. Memorial museums reflect the growing tendency of viewing trauma sites as artistic, interactive spaces that engage with those who visit them. This article examines the aesthetics of memory in three memorial museums situated in Rwanda’s western province: Bisesero, Gatwaro and Ngoma. It reflects on the work of the Rwandan architect Vedaste Ngarambe and his contribution as a local voice by considering how the architect’s aesthetic design choices reflect not only stories of the massacres that unfolded at the three sites but also the mourning culture of the community in which they are located.</text>

<text>In emergent fields of practice, there is often an ‘ethics lag’ — a period of significant innovation during which the focus is on what can be accomplished more than on the safeguards that should be put in place to protect the public from the unanticipated consequences of that innovation. This is true of the emergent field of digital open-source investigations conducted for international criminal justice purposes, in which researchers and analysts comb the Internet for information relevant to their research. One sub-field where the ethics lag is particularly of concern is digital investigations of conflict-related sexual and gender-based violence (CRSV), especially with regards to whether and when investigators need consent from social media posters, survivors, bystanders and others to use information discovered in online spaces. This article explores options for centring and promoting victim safety and dignity by clarifying ethical issues that investigators should consider before using open-source information to support international investigations and prosecutions of CRSV. After identifying where the relevant law leaves gaps in guidance, the authors discuss a series of considerations that may help investigators ethically handle such sensitive data. Ultimately, the authors underscore the importance of securing consent from survivors when engaging in digital open-source investigations into sexual violence. What arguably varies is who should seek that consent, when, and how.</text>

<text>This book maps the encounters between Indigenous Peoples and local communities with mining companies in various postcolonial contexts. Combining comparative and multidisciplinary analysis, the contributors to this volume shine a light on how the mining industry might adapt its practices to the political and legal contexts where they operate. Understanding these processes and how communities respond to these encounters is critical to documenting where and how encounters with mining may benefit or negatively impact Indigenous Peoples. The experiences and reflections shared by Indigenous and non-Indigenous contributors will enhance our understanding of evolving practices and of the different strategies and discourses developed by Indigenous Peoples to deal with mining projects. By mobilizing in-depth fieldwork in five regions—Australia, Canada, Sweden, New Caledonia, and Brazil—this body of work highlights voices often marginalized in mining development studies, including those of Indigenous Peoples and women. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of mining and the extractive industries, sustainable development, natural resource management, and Indigenous Peoples.</text>

<text>A partner's reproductive coercion and abuse (RCA) can significantly undermine women's physical health and psychological wellbeing. Yet little research has explored how RCA affects experiences of mothering and relationships with children. Based on an analysis of interviews with 30 Australian mothers, we found that RCA affected mothering in complex ways. Many struggled with feeling detached, resentful, and guilty toward their children, while some found mothering an emotionally and morally restorative experience after the RCA. All felt compelled to conceal their abuse from their children and others. The findings have implications for how healthcare practitioners can support mothers in the aftermath of RCA.</text>

<text>A recent study conducted by researchers at Columbia University has uncovered a new genetic variant that may offer protection against Alzheimer's disease for individuals at high risk. The study found that this gene variant could reduce one's risk of developing the disease by up to 70%. This discovery marks a significant advancement in the field of Alzheimer's research, offering a potential alternative approach to delaying the onset of the disease by focusing on genetic factors.</text>
