However, little is known about Aboriginal peoples’ experiences of living with COPD and how they navigate health care systems. This study used thematic analysis and Aboriginal methodology to explore Aboriginal peoples’ lived experiences of COPD, their health care journey from receiving a diagnosis of COPD to the clinical management, and the impact of COPD on their daily lives. We conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews over a 6-month period with 18 Aboriginal adults diagnosed with COPD from four Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS) in New South Wales, Australia. Reflexive thematic analysis was employed to ensure rigour. The findings revealed deeply personal and reflective stories shaped by historical, social, and cultural realities of Aboriginal peoples living with COPD. Four themes were identified characterising their experiences. Based on the findings, the following guidance is provided on future COPD care for Aboriginal peoples: Better alignment of existing COPD management with Aboriginal peoples’ cultural contexts and perspectives to improve access to culturally safe care; Increased funding for ACCHS to enhance COPD management, such as early detection through case finding and access to ACCHS-led pulmonary rehabilitation; Engaging family members in COPD management and providing culturally centred COPD education that facilitates discussions and builds health literacy and self-management skills; Implementing health promotion initiatives to increase awareness and counteract fear and shame to improve early COPD detection. The impact of the shifting commercial landscape and public interest in plant-based eating on dietary intake is unknown. Objectives To examine trends in the consumption and composition of plant-based diets in the United States adults. Methods Serial cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used to assess trends in the proportion of United States adults aged ≥20 y consuming a plant-based diet (defined as ≥50% total protein from plants on a 24-h dietary recall) from 1999–2000 to 2017–March 2020 (n = 51,698). Trends in processing level (percentage energy intake from ultraprocessed foods) and diet quality [Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2020 scores] were assessed in the subset of adults consuming plant-based diets (n = 8327). Results The proportion of United States adults consuming plant-based diets increased from 14.4% (95% CI: 12.9%, 16.0%) to 17.2% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 15.5%, 19.1%; P = 0.005 for trend). In all survey cycles, ultraprocessed foods accounted for the majority of energy intake, and ultraprocessed food intake in plant-based diets did not significantly change over time [50.7% kcal (95% CI: 47.3%, 54.1%) in 1999–2000 compared with 52.7% kcal (95% CI: 49.7%, 55.6%) in 2017–March 2020; P for trend = 0.34]. The quality of plant-based diets, measured by HEI-2020 scores, improved from 52.1 (95% CI: 49.7, 54.6) to 55.8 (95% CI: 54.1, 57.5; P for trend &lt;0.001). Conclusions Between 1999 and March 2020, the proportion of United States adults consuming a plant-based diet increased. Among people consuming plant-based diets, ultraprocessed foods contributed most to energy intake and there was no sustained change in intake over time. Much of what is understood about their life roles is in the context of Western labor statistics and economic indicators, which compare data, such as vocational and economic trajectories, to non-Native American values. Contributing to the growing number of Indigenous-based epistemologies and methodologies for working with communities who have experienced colonization and exploitation in academic science, the current study centered on the paradigm drawn from the author’s Indigenous worldview and understanding of the Menominee Theory of Oma͞eqnomenēwak Ma͞ehnow Pemātesekan (Menominee Good Way of Life) as its epistemology and research methodology. Using an Indigenous framework allowed the author to situate Native women’s gendered experiences in pre-colonial gender norms and U.S. historical context into their understanding of wellbeing which provided inroads into how research and vocational psychology understand the intersection of social, economic, and work disparities they face. Guided by Oma͞eqnomenēwak Ma͞ehnow Pemātesekan ethical protocols and Native American women knowledge guides, the author invited 15 Native American women (knowledge holders) from the Midwest to share stories about their life roles. Following the request of the women knowledge holders, their stories, along with the author’s in-between space experiences and meaning-making, were weaved together to form one personhood called Nētekaeh (my sister). The findings are presented across four seasons and describe Nētekaeh's trajectory of resilience and growth in her understanding of life roles and include (a) Sīkwan (spring): Rebirthing women’s kinship brings awareness about their experiences, (b) Nēpen (summer): Cultural resilience serves as an opportunity to restore balance, (c) Takuakōwew (autumn): (i) Women’s voices and knowledge must be recognized and honored and (ii) We must address issues of safety that concern women’s wellbeing, and (d) Pepōn (winter): Reflecting on our sources of knowledge leads to new beginnings. These seasonal markers highlight women’s gifts of wisdom that teach us how their life roles are shaped by cultural identity, values, and resilience, which set the stage for their vocational identities and allow them to strategize around barriers toward community wellness and cultural survivance. Implications for clinical settings, outreach/policy/consultation, and Indigenous methodologies in research are provided to advance the understanding of Indigenous self-determination in their conceptualization of wellness. The centuries-long enslavement of African Americans, the ethnocide of Native American/Alaskan Natives, and the genocide of European Jews represent some of the most horrific catastrophes of human history through the destruction of identity, culture, language, and religion. The destabilization of these distinct groups and the extreme violence experienced by historical injustices have resulted in cultural, mental, emotional, and physical obstructions with profound economic, psychological, and health impacts encompassing both the wounds inflicted by oppression and resilience. The literature review examined the three cultural groups and how historical and intergenerational trauma have incubated stressors and adverse social conditions for the descendants of Enslaved Peoples, Indigenous Peoples, and Holocaust Survivors as the sequelae of unhealed trauma related to enslavement, colonization, and genocide persist. The literature on slavery, colonialization, and the Holocaust was used to portray the effects of cultural genocide and intergenerational transmission of trauma across cultures. Through ten in-depth interviews, this phenomenological study examined one of the three cultural groups to centralize the study’s focus and explore intergenerational and historical trauma, the effects of colonialism and genocide, and the resilience of the descendants of Native American/Alaskan Natives in contemporary times by examining unconscious and unintentional indirect and direct ancestral transmission. This study integrated cultural voices, ancestral narratives, and theoretical frameworks by incorporating trauma theories, such as the post- traumatic slave syndrome theory and colonial trauma response, which provide a deeper understanding of the physical and psychological soul wounds and behaviors prevalent to descendants. Social justice theory, tribal critical race theory (TribalCrit), and transformative frameworks are utilized to interpret the consequences that have influenced the lives of these cultures throughout centuries and for generations. These theories seek to bring change and address social injustices while advocating for equity and universal human rights, which are critical when discussing the philosophical epistemologies of marginalized individuals and communities. Research has demonstrated that maternal trauma is associated with children's behavioural difficulties and challenges in family functioning, such as impaired communication and harsh parenting. This pilot study is aimed at evaluating the preliminary effectiveness of family therapy for Kosovar mothers who experienced conflict-related sexual violence in 1998–1999 and later developed PTSD and their children in improving family functioning and reducing behavioural difficulties in postwar times. Sixty-four mothers were randomised to an intervention group or a waitlist control group. Data was collected during a screening phase, at baseline before intervention initiation, after the intervention group completed family therapy and once the waitlist control group received the intervention. Generalised linear mixed models were used to analyse group differences in family functioning and children's behaviours over time. At follow-up, mothers in the intervention group reported improved family functioning. However, mothers in the waitlist control group reported significantly fewer behavioural difficulties than mothers in the intervention group before the control group had started family therapy. There was no significant interaction between group condition and time for child-rated family functioning. Overall, this pilot study suggests that family therapy could be effective in reducing the effects of intergenerational trauma related to PTSD and conflict-related sexual violence. Future research should evaluate the long-term effects of family therapy to assess if immediate effects were maintained. The majority of the existing memorials were initially constructed by survivors supported by the local community, administration and other partners in response to the urgent need to bury the bodies of genocide victims. These sites have transformed over the years as memorial policies have codified and evolved. Memorial museums reflect the growing tendency of viewing trauma sites as artistic, interactive spaces that engage with those who visit them. This article examines the aesthetics of memory in three memorial museums situated in Rwanda’s western province: Bisesero, Gatwaro and Ngoma. It reflects on the work of the Rwandan architect Vedaste Ngarambe and his contribution as a local voice by considering how the architect’s aesthetic design choices reflect not only stories of the massacres that unfolded at the three sites but also the mourning culture of the community in which they are located. While the EPSR puts forward a prima facie balance between employment, equal opportunities and social protection, two important questions arise: a) whether and to what extent the resources available at EU level are sufficiently balanced across the different dimensions of the EPSR; and b) which implications this may have for achieving the 2030 poverty target. Analysing the three domains of the EPSR, its Action Plan and the wider EU legal framework of the principles contained in the EPSR, the paper argues that abundant EU resources are available for the areas of equality and employment, but fewer for social inclusion. The empirical evidence on poverty trends over the past decades, however, points to important successes in terms of employment and (gender) equality, but not with respect to social inclusion: a significant increase in employment and defeminisation of poverty have been accompanied by greater precarity for low-skilled men and women. Particularly striking is the rise in the risk of poverty among jobless households, linked with the weakening of the poverty reduction capacity of social protection for this group. Meeting the European social inclusion targets will thus require policies that duly focus on strengthening the framework for social inclusion and social protection.
