Van Meeuwen Publication Date 2024 Language English Access Restricted Access Abstract It has been established that parents who experienced childhood abuse are at greater risk for negative outcomes in the relationship with their own children (Racine et al., 2018; Sauvé et al. 2021), including insecure and unresolved attachment classifications (Raby et al., 2017; Roisman et al., 2017). Early experiences in childhood provide an important foundation on which the child will build its future attachment representations (Bowlby, 1969). However, discontinuity of attachment classification between early childhood and late adolescence is linked to high-risk contexts and negative life events, such as abuse, parental depression, or a change in parental sensitivity (Fraley, 2002; Booth LaForce et al., 2014). A history of childhood abuse has been linked to the intergenerational transmission of insecure and disorganized attachment (Madigan et al., 2019) as well as later maladjusted parenting behaviors (Savage et al., 2019). One of the more dramatic examples was the destruction of the Arab world’s millennia-old Jewish communities. While this destruction is often discussed only in reference to the creation of the State of Israel, this article proposes a complementary model for understanding it, a model predicated on these Jews’ status as ordinary, not exceptional, inhabitants of the Ottoman world, and the disruption caused by the end of the Ottoman empire and its replacement with European colonial rule. Using interwar Aleppo as a case study, this article demonstrates how the end of the Ottoman system of religious communities led to an extended period of dysfunction for Aleppo’s Jewish communal institutions. Under the French Mandate, this dysfunction left Aleppo’s Jews unable to contend with a succession of crises, including a three-way competition for the community’s loyalty between French administrators, Arab nationalists and the Zionist movement. This dysfunction set the stage for the community’s terminal crisis – the 1947 pogroms. As its stakeholder, the researcher seeks to know the social factors influencing the education of Indigenous peoples-students. This study used a multi- method approach of two sets of respondents to collect and analyze data. Descriptive research design from Indigenous students respondents abled the study to get Persistence and Continuity, External Threat, and Internal Threat as factors influencing education. It found a correlation among them, seeing as the findings showed that students are in school because they need education for a better life, so the distance from school does not matter, and learning will not restrict their practices and beliefs. The social factors influencing their education can only be overcome by pursuing education, contrary to why the other respondents, Indigenous peoples-out-of-school youths, stopped attending school. Through narrative inquiry, the analyzed data found that the reason for out-of-school youth is providing for the family as their priority. The global pandemic cut off their financial source and caused them to get pregnant early, which shifted their priority. Despite having one of the most extensive family support systems and progressive income redistribution policies in North America, the Canadian province of Québec still faces geographic variations in socioeconomic conditions that remain a major risk factor for child protection involvement. Objective This study asks how child protection involvement is distributed across socioeconomically distinct geographic areas of the province. Drawing from prior literature, we hypothesize that the highest level of child protection involvement across childhood (age 0–17) is found in the lowest socioeconomic areas. Participants & setting This is a population-based prevalence study using administrative child protection data spanning the years 2000 to 2017 across Québec. Methods We constructed cumulative risk life tables of first instances of child protection events (report confirmation, compromised security or development, and out-of-home placement). Prevalence rates were mapped onto 10,650 Census dissemination areas divided into three tiers according to a validated socioeconomic status (SES) index. Results The highest childhood prevalence of confirmed child protection reports, finding of compromised security or development, and out-of-home placement was found in the lowest SES areas. Rates in low SES areas can be over twice the rates in high SES areas. Conclusions Area-level socioeconomic vulnerability remains a robust predictor of child protection involvement even in a socially progressive context. Our findings underscore that without targeted pediatric and family services, as well as poverty-alleviation programs for high-need families in high-need areas, even well-intentioned systems may fall short of reaching the families most in need. We will begin by providing a history of the development of trauma discourse and how it has become more commonly part of everyday mainstream conversation. We argue for the need to reinvigorate feminist analyses, which center the social context of trauma and violence including relations of power, oppression, exclusion, discrimination and marginalization. The conservatizing effects of mainstream approaches to being “trauma-informed” has depoliticized and degendered trauma work and the re-storying or creation of alternative stories will be offered. The focus today has become very individualized, shifting away from a “personal is political” to a “political is personal” framing. We provide an analysis of how the current conflation of postfeminism, neoliberalism, and biomedicalism has shaped the dominant trauma discourse and subsequent approaches to practice. We will argue that we need to resist this dominant discourse and offer alternative understandings and approaches alongside the integration of analyses of how discursive and institutional practices and structural systems of power and oppression are often co-implicated in people’s struggles. Unhelpful dominant stories are unpacked helping to produce a counterviewing of people’s stories of struggle and the development of counterstories that participate in social resistance. Using predefined evidence classification criteria, we evaluated evidence from 47 meta-analyses encompassing 22,055,269 individuals. Overall, 79% of these analyses indicated direct associations between greater sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and higher risks of adverse health outcomes. Convincing evidence (class I) supported direct associations between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and risks of depression, cardiovascular disease, nephrolithiasis, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and higher uric acid concentrations. Highly suggestive evidence (class II) supported associations with risks of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and dental caries. Out of the remaining 40 meta-analyses, 29 were graded as suggestive or weak in the strength of evidence (classes III and IV), and 11 showed no evidence (class V). These findings inform and provide support for population-based and public health strategies aimed at reducing sugary drink consumption for improved health. Therefore, we provide an illustrative case example of a graduate student-led, cross-institutional Indigenous Research Group (IRG) mentored by an Indigenous faculty member. Using first-person and synthesized narratives, we summarize our transformative experience in the IRG as a journey in which we found belonging and community, culturally responsive mentorship and training, and the support to become emergent Indigenous psychologists. Informed by the student and faculty mentor reflections on the IRG, we then provide recommendations for graduate programs to support Indigenous students. Ultimately, the IRG is a testament to the creative ways Indigenous scholars navigate the academy and serves as well as a call for faculty to support the next generation of AI/AN psychologists.
