<text>Employees from marginalized groups frequently face low performance expectations based on group membership. Although past research shows several different reactions to these types of expectations, such as stereotype threat and stereotype reactance, scholars still know little about when and why low expectations spur individuals to not only try to prove themselves, but to seek to change expectations and opportunities for others like them. Addressing this discrepancy, I introduce trailblazing motivation, which captures the desire to set new precedents that open doors for others. I integrate self-determination theory and regulatory focus theory to identify group-based low expectations, moderated by a sense of belonging with one’s broad marginalized group, and core self-evaluations as key antecedents of trailblazing motivation. I hypothesize that trailblazing motivation will lead to not only greater persistence in one’s work—as with stereotype reactance—but also potentially riskier behaviors aimed at changing expectations for one’s broad group on a larger scale, including advocacy for other marginalized group members and diversity, equity, and inclusion-related issue selling. I test and find support for these hypotheses across a time-lagged survey study and a preregistered experiment. I also establish discriminant validity for trailblazing motivation from other responses to group-based low performance expectations. This research advances our understanding of the behavior of marginalized individuals at work by helping to explain (1) when and why people facing group-based low expectations go beyond seeking to prove their own abilities and also strive to effect change for their marginalized group as a whole and (2) how a closer connection to one’s marginalized group can drive people to increase opportunities for that broad group.</text>

<text>"Health inequity between Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) peoples and other citizens is an important policy concern in Canada, as in other colonial countries. Racism in healthcare has been identified as contributing to poorer care and to worse outcomes. Despite a large literature regarding racism in other healthcare contexts, the dimensions of the existing literature on anti-Indigenous racism in Canadian healthcare are unclear. A scoping review examined the evidence of anti-Indigenous racist experiences in healthcare in the research literature, including the types of racist behaviours identified, settings studied, and Indigenous populations and geographic regions included. We identified English and French language journal articles on anti-Indigenous racism in Canadian healthcare settings in Scopus, PubMed, CINAHL, and the Bibliography of Indigenous Peoples in North America, and grey literature reports. A total of 2250 journal articles and 9 grey literature reports published since 2000 were included in screening, and 66 studies were included in the final review. Most used qualitative interviews with patients, but a large proportion included healthcare providers. Most were conducted in urban settings, a majority in Ontario or British Columbia, with mixed Indigenous populations. The largest proportion focussed on patient experiences with healthcare in general, rather than specific clinical contexts. Most racist experiences identified were ‘covert’ racism, including patients feeling treated differently from non-Indigenous patients, being ignored, treated more slowly, or not believed. Stereotyping of Indigenous peoples as substance users, poor patients, or poor parents was also commonly reported. ‘Overt racism’, including the use of racist slurs, was not widely found. Some quantitative studies did use standardized or validated instruments to capture racist experiences, but most did not result in generalizable estimates of their prevalence. The few studies linking racism to health outcomes found that experiencing racism was related to reluctance to seek healthcare, potentially leading to higher unmet healthcare needs. Gender was the intersecting dimension most identified as shaping healthcare experiences, with Indigenous women and girls at risk to specific stereotypes. Some papers suggested that socio-economically disadvantaged Indigenous people were at the highest risk to experiencing racism. Types of anti-Indigenous racism identified in Canadian healthcare appear similar to those reported in other jurisdictions. Indigenous peoples facing multiple dimensions of disadvantage, especially gender and social class, may be the most likely to experience racism. It is likely that the experience of racism in healthcare has implications for Indigenous peoples’ health, mainly by reducing healthcare access."</text>

<text>Numerous books explore the "how to" of qualitative research, but few discuss what it means to actually engage in it. In Demarginalizing Voices, scholars share personal stories about their research with marginalized populations, including Aboriginal peoples, sex workers, the dead and the dying, the imprisoned or recently released, and the homeless and hospitalized. They address issues of activism, emotional attachment, and the challenges of adopting innovative methods within the constraints of ethics review boards. These powerful accounts from the cutting-edge of qualitative research not only create a space in academia that centres marginalized voices, they open up the field to new debates and discussion. -- Provided by publisher.</text>

<text>Background Food insecurity has involved more than 750 million individuals worldwide. The association of food insecurity with socio-economic factors is also undeniable demand more consideration. Food insecurity will become a global priority by 2030. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined current literature concerning the association between food insecurity and psychological distress. Methods Relevant researches were identified by searching databases including PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Web of Science, ProQuest, and Cochrane Library up to June 2024 without language limitation. Then a snowball search was conducted in the eligible studies. The quality assessment was made through Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. Results Data were available from 44 cross-sectional articles for systematic review and 17 eligible articles for meta-analysis with 2,267,012 and 1,953,636 participants, respectively. Findings support the growing segment of literature on the association between food insecurity and psychological distress. The highly represented groups were households with low income. Psychological and diabetic distress was directly associated with food insecurity as it increased the odds of distress to 329% (OR: 3.29; 95% CI: 2.46–4.40). Sleep problems, anxiety, depression, lower life satisfaction, obesity, and a higher rate of smoking were among the secondary outcomes. Conclusion Food insecurity was a common stressor that can have a negative impact on psychological well-being and even physical health. The findings should be considered in the public health and making policy-making process.</text>

<text>Substance misuse is associated with high impulsive behavior and may represent one behavioral manifestation of impulsive behavior. One predictor of substance misuse is childhood maltreatment, which is, in turn, associated with difficulty regulating unwanted emotion. Accordingly, impulsive behavior is high among individuals exposed to maltreatment and likely functions as one behavioral strategy for coping with unwanted internal experiences. Consequently, identification of behavioral processes that may account for the childhood maltreatment and impulsive behavior relation in substance misusers appears warranted. One process-based behavioral model that may be useful in this endeavor is psychological flexibility, which includes the inflexible processes of experiential avoidance (EA) and cognitive fusion. High EA is positively associated with substance misuse and childhood maltreatment. Moreover, high EA is related to impulsive behavior, suggesting impulsive behavior may be one behavioral manifestation of attempts to regulate unwanted emotions. High avoidance of maltreatmentrelated internal experiences may be expressed as impulsive behavior. As such, EA may mediate the childhood maltreatment-impulsive behavior relation. EA becomes dysfunctional when overused as a coping strategy, suggesting specification of individual-level factors associated with increased EA in the context of childhood maltreatment may be warranted. High cognitive fusion is associated with impulsive behavior, including high substance use, EA, and negative sequelae of maltreatment. Indeed, entanglement with one’s thoughts may worsen distressing experiences related to maltreatment, thus strengthening the childhood maltreatment-EA relation. Yet, no research has distinguished the relations of impulsive behavior, childhood maltreatment, EA, and cognitive fusion among substance use treatment seekers. Accordingly, the present study examined these relations among a sample of substance use treatment seekers who reported exposure to childhood trauma (N=129). Results suggested history of childhood maltreatment was positively correlated with EA and cognitive fusion, and not correlated with impulsive choice. EA was positively correlated with cognitive fusion and not correlated with impulsive choice. Cognitive fusion and impulsive choice were positively correlated. EA did not account for the relation of childhood maltreatment and impulsive behavior, and cognitive fusion did not moderate the relation of childhood maltreatment and EA. Results are discussed in terms of additional explanations that may modify the childhood maltreatment-impulsive choice relation.</text>

<text>Meanings of home differ across cultures, ontologies, and geographies. Housing literature predominantly applies a Western worldview to home, with home meaning a dwelling and a site of belonging, economic value and social reproduction. First Peoples’ meanings of home are largely rendered invisible and undervalued within this discourse. A systematic scoping review explored meanings of home from the perspective of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. Applying Indigenous research methodology, only records that privileged the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were included. A non-Aboriginal researcher was guided by the knowledges and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers to develop a culturally appropriate overview on home. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s meanings of home are relational. Home is about relationships to family, community, culture, Country, spirituality, and a sense of ontological belonging and safety. This review expands the housing studies mindset on home, centring First Peoples’ meanings of home within an Indigenous framing and methodology.</text>
