Thursday, 5 October 2023, 1:00-2:30PM EDT / 7:00-8:30PM GMT+2 / 8:00-9:30PM IDT
Participants are encouraged to watch the 45-minute film Dui Rroma prior to the webinar. Produced in 2013, Dui Roma (Two Roma), chronicles the suffering and survival of Hugo Höllenreiner, a Roma/Sinto from Germany, victim/survivor of the infamous “angel of death” Nazi doctor Joseph Mengele’s experiments in Auschwitz concentration camp. In the film, Adrian Gaspar, the young aspiring Roma composer (and the Director’s son), is Hugo’s companion listener/interviewer, who then sets Hugo’s experiences to music in an oratorio titled Symphonia Romani – Bari Duk. Both the documentary and the musical work are mainly in Rromanes (the native language) with subtitles. Dui Roma uses contrast to raise awareness and heal/strengthen Roma identity. Webinar participants include the film maker, the interviewer/composer, and Hugo’s grandson.
