As I head home from Berlin Freedom Week, I wanted to reflect on this past week in Berlin, a week that has been nothing short of extraordinary. As this city marked the 36th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the city once again became a beacon of hope and freedom for democracy defenders from around the world.

Over the weekend, 180 delegates from 60 countries gathered in the Berlin City Parliament for the World Liberty Congress General Assembly (World Liberty Congress Elections). These weren’t ordinary delegates – they were freedom fighters, many of whom have been political prisoners, led protests in their home countries, or been forced into exile.

The assembly was a remarkable display of democratic practice in action. Delegates deliberated, voted on their agenda, and elected new leadership for the 2025-2027 period: exemplifying the practicing democracy, not just internally, but to understand how democracy works.

The Congress adopted the powerful Berlin Manifesto, which declared with one voice that “liberty is a birthright of every human being” and resolved to “stand as one transnational community in defence of that sacred right”. The manifesto addressed critical issues from supporting Ukraine to confronting gender apartheid, from defending political prisoners to embracing freedom technologies like Bitcoin.

Throughout Berlin Freedom Week, we heard from extraordinary individuals who embody the spirit of resistance. Maria Corina Machado, speaking via video from hiding in Venezuela, Masih Alinejad shared her powerful story of comparing compulsory hijab to the Berlin Wall, which led Iran’s Supreme Leader to put a bounty on her head Sebastian Lai spoke movingly about his father Jimmy Lai, imprisoned in Hong Kong.

What became clear throughout these days is that this is not just a collection of individual struggles, but a global movement, and as I head hope home, I go with these thoughts in mind:

The Congress represents something unprecedented — a coalition exercising their democratic rights, most of whom have never had this right.

These exiled human rights defenders, political prisoners, and democracy advocates have shown that even in the darkest circumstances, the human spirit cannot be broken. They have transformed their suffering into strength, their exile into advocacy, and their individual struggles into collective power.

They are not merely survivors – they are architects of freedom. United across continents and cultures, speaking with one voice against tyranny, they prove that walls built by dictators are no match for the unbreakable will of those who refuse to surrender their dreams of liberty. In their courage lies the future of democracy itself, and in their unity, the promise that freedom will always find a way.
