Racial equity report offers recommendations to Portland

Black Lives Matter holds protest in Portland

A Racial Equity Steering Committee is recommending the city do a number of things, including screening police officers for personal prejudice, racism or any other discriminatory behavior.

The committee is also recommending better tracking of police behavior.

A mandate to minimize the amount of police patrol in racially marginalized areas is also among a long list of other recommendations in the 65-page report.

A co-chair of the committee also says too often, police shouldn’t be the default response to 911 calls.

The protests in June last year followed in the footsteps of demonstrations across the country over the death of George Floyd, who was murdered by former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin.

It’s now up to the city council how to move forward after that racial equity report.
