MADISON, WI (WRN) – A report from the Speakers’ Task Force on Racial Disparities includes a recommendation on police use of choke holds.
The report includes 18 recommendations, developed by the panel’s Subcommittee on Law Enforcement Policies and Standards.
Those include a statewide prohibition against choke holds, except in life threatening situations or self-defense.
The task force created in the wake of a white Kenosha police officer shooting a Black man is making 18 recommendations. But the group stopped short of calling for a total ban on chokeholds and no-knock warrants as Gov. Tony Evers wants.
The task force’s Republican co-chair is Representative Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna).
He says he’s optimistic many recommendations will become law.
Democrat Shelia Stubbs says this is just the beginning of police reform.
