Tom Fletcher, UN Humanitarian Chief, again, amplifying the gendered dimensions of the war, calling for a ceasefire and protection of civilians, highlighting the plight for Sudanese women and girls, their exposure to sexual violence, food insecurity faced by women headed households, and the suffering of pregnant women, persons with disabilities and other marginalised groups.

His Security Council statement resonates with the call from Sudanese women humanitarian responders who speak not only as responders but also as witnesses, calling for:
– An Immediate Halt to Violence: Stop the assault on El Fasher.
Ensure safe corridors for women, children, the wounded, and humanitarian workers.
– Guarantee the protection of aid workers particularly local women humanitarians risking their lives daily.
– Protection of Women and Girls: Uphold IHL, including the prohibition of sexual violence and starvation as weapons of war. Prioritize reproductive health, psychosocial support, and GBV services in all humanitarian interventions.
– Support international and regional mechanisms to investigate and prosecute war crimes, including sexual and gender-based violence.
– Ensure the preservation of evidence and protection of survivors and witnesses.
– Recognize that women-led organizations are sustaining the humanitarian response.
– Provide direct, flexible funding and ensure women’s full participation in decision-making on access, protection, and recovery.

Please read their statement and amplify Sudanese women’s voices.
