Walking more may reduce your risk of disease and death

Recent research from the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre highlights the potential  health benefits of increasing daily step counts for individuals who spend extensive periods sitting. Published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the study analyzed data from over 72,000 participants and found that increasing daily steps, particularly up to 10,000, correlates with a significant reduction in the risk of death and cardiovascular disease (CVD).

The study revealed that for each increase in daily steps, the risk of death decreased by 39% and the risk of CVD dropped by 21%. Notably, these benefits were observed irrespective of the amount of time spent sitting. While previous research has established connections between higher step counts and lower mortality and CVD risks, this study uniquely focused on whether increased walking could mitigate the adverse effects of sedentary behavior, utilizing data from wearable devices.

Lead author Dr. Matthew Ahmadi emphasized that while walking is beneficial, it should not be viewed as a complete remedy for the risks associated with prolonged sitting. The research underscores the importance of all physical movement and suggests that individuals can counterbalance some of the health risks linked to sedentary lifestyles by increasing their daily steps.

The study’s methodology involved participants wearing accelerometers to record their step counts and sedentary time over a week. The results indicated that those averaging 9,000 to 10,000 steps daily experienced the most significant reductions in health risks, though benefits were noted even at lower step counts.

While the observational nature of the study means it cannot definitively establish causation, the findings contribute to the growing body of evidence advocating for increased physical activity as a means to improve health outcomes, particularly for those with sedentary jobs.
