Today in 1947, the U.N. General Assembly passed Resolution 181 by a vote of 33 to 13 in favor of partitioning 20% of British Mandatory Palestine into independent Jewish and Arab states (nearly 80 percent of what was the historic land of Palestine and was to have been the Jewish National Home as defined by the League of Nations was severed by the British in 1922 and allocated to what became Transjordan, with Jewish settlement there being prohibited). The Jewish side accepted the UN plan for the establishment of two states, despite severe reservations, but the Arabs rejected it outright and launched a war of annihilation. Even though over 1% of their population was killed, the Jews nevertheless prevailed and established the State of Israel on May 14, 1948.

“We shall live at last as free men on our own soil, and die peacefully in our own home.

The world will be freed by our liberty, enriched by our wealth, magnified by our greatness.

And whatever we attempt there to accomplish for our own welfare will react with beneficent force for the good of humanity.”

– Theodore Herzl, The Jewish State
