Week’s worth of justice for Patrick Lyoya protests create these scenes in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Hundreds of people have taken to downtown streets over the last week in response to the fatal shooting of Patrick Lyoya.

Starting on April 13, just hours after the Grand Rapids Police Department released video showing the April 4 killing of Lyoya, a 26-year-old Black man, by an unnamed police officer, people gathered and marched in downtown and near the police department.

Protesters took to the streetsdemanding justice for Lyoya. The protests have ranged in size from a dozen to upward of 500 people, even with cooler temperatures, rain and high winds. So far the protests have remained peaceful.

Lyoya died when he was shot in the head following a traffic stop. The two wrestled over the officer’s Taser before the shooting and the officer can be heard yelling “drop the Taser” before firing a shot while on top of Lyoya.

When he made the traffic stop, the officer told Lyoya that the license plate did not match Lyoya’s vehicle.

Attorneys for the Lyoya family outlined the findings of an independent autopsy at a press conference Tuesday in Detroit.

Here are some MLive photos and videos of protesters taking to the streets:
