This International Center for Multigenerational Legacies of Trauma webinar is held in advance of the 3 August 2024 commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the beginning of the ISIL/Da’esh genocide of the Yazidi people.  A cultural and historical introduction of the Yazidi people by Yazidi international professional experts will be followed by international experiential experts:  Genocide victim/survivors at home and in the diaspora will share their experiences and insights as men, boys, women and girls during and after the genocide, and a call for reparative justice for current and future generations.

Speakers:

Shireen Shekh Kalo, BA

A Yezidi mother of two, Shireen lives in Germany.  She is a writer, poet, and researcher who has published a collection of short stories in Arabic and a book about the Yazidi Genocide on August 3, 2014 in English.  Shireen has a BA in English and is pursuing an MA in English Literature.  She is fluent in Arabic, Kurdish, German, and English.  

Dawood Murad Khatari, MA

A Yezidi born in Hatara (a village near Mosul), Dawood is a teacher and researcher who has authored 48 collections of works related to the Yazidi Genocide, Lalish Temple, and Campaigns and Fatwas Against Yazidis during the Ottoman Empire.  Dawood has an MA in Modern History and is the Head of Studies and Research at the Lalish Cultural Center in Kurdistan, Iraq.  

Pir Mamou Othman, PhD

A researcher, lecturer, and the Founder of the Institute of Psychotherapy and Psychotraumatology at the University of Duhok, Kurdistan, Dr. Othman has degrees in English Literature, Psychology, and Political Science from the University of Baghdad and the Free University of Berlin.  He served as a Legal Interpreter and Minister of State for Civil Society in Baghdad and was Chief of International Relations for the Kurdistan Regional Government.  

Shireen Khudeeda, BA

A survivor of the ISIS attack against Yazidis on August 3, 2014, Shireen is was living in Sinjar, Iraq and was captured with her family.  Shireen was in captivity until February of 2017, when she made a daring escape.  She is an activist who shares her personal story of captivity.  Having earned a BA in Business Management, Shireen plans to continue for a Master’s and Doctoral degrees in this field.  

Saif Mito

A survivor of the ISIS attack against Yazidis on August, 3, 2014, Saif was living in Kocho, Kurdistan and was captured along with his family.  After two years in captivity, he ultimately escaped.  Saif is currently studying chemistry and has written a book about his experiences.  A recipient of the Diana Award in 2018, he has a Facebook page that supports Yazidis living in refugee camps.  

Haider Elias, BA, MS

A globally-renowned expert on Yazidis, Haider travels worldwide to advocate for Yazidis. Hader is the co-founder and former president of YAZDA, a Yazidi NGO and the co-founder of Nadia’s Initiative, an NGO headed by Yazidi survivor, Nadia Murad.  Haider has served as a translator and cultural advisor for the US government in Iraq.  Haider is a member of the Advisory Council of the ICMGLT.

Dr. Yael Danieli 

A Clinical psychologist, traumatologist, victimologist and psychohistorian, Dr. Danieli is Founder and Executive Director of the International Center for the study, prevention and treatment of MultiGenerational Legacies of Trauma; Director, Group Project for Holocaust Survivors and their Children and Past-President, International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.
