For more than half a century, the world’s peoples have lived with the bomb: in awe of its power, anxious about its destructiveness, and aware that it was used to kill twice and could be used again, perhaps against oneself next time. This knowledge is most vivid, and has been most fiercely debated, in the United States and Japan. Both Americans and Japanese have revisited this issue repeatedly and reinterpreted it through the prism of the interven- ing half-century.
