Intergenerational Legacies of Trauma in Kosovo 25 Years After the War and Amid Recent Global Conflicts

Today’s International Center for MultiGenerational Legacies of Trauma webinar is held on June 12 in observance of Kosovo’s Liberation Day – the withdrawal of Serbian forces in 1999. Our multidisciplinary presenters will report and reflect on the intergenerational multidimensional manifestations of war trauma in the Kosovo society during the past 25 years.  

Speakers

Dr. Feride Rushiti

Founder and Executive Director of Kosova Rehabilitation Center for Torture Victims. Feride Rushiti is a pioneering human rights activist in Kosovo, known for her advocacy that led to recognizing wartime sexual violence survivors and securing pensions for them. In March 2018, she received the U.S. Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage Award. Throughout her career, she has initiated important laws and policies, aiding marginalized groups and setting examples globally for addressing collective trauma and wartime sexual violence.

Dr. Aliriza Arënliu

A Professor at the Department of Psychology and Director of the Institute of Psychology at the University of Prishtina, Kosovo. Aliriza worked with WHO’s mental health program immediately after the war in Kosovo (1999-2008).  He earned his PhD in psychology at Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich. From 2014-2015, he was a D43 postdoc fellow at the University of Illinois, Chicago. He has also co-investigated NIH-funded projects.

Raba Gjoshi

A graduate of Clinical Psychology from the University of Prishtina, Raba holds a Master of Science in Politics of Conflicts, Rights, and Justice from SOAS, University of London. Raba is a Fellow of Historical Dialogue and Accountability at Columbia University. She has conducted research on the multigenerational legacy of war trauma in Kosovo and has designed and implemented numerous projects focusing on the region’s historical past.

Jeta Rexha

With BA and MA in Sociology from the University of Prishtina, Jeta studied at the International Institute of Social Studies, The Hague and completed a fellowship in International Gender Studies at the University of Iceland. She co-authored works on subculture movements and state-building. Jeta is a Board Member at the Program for Gender Studies and Research, University of Prishtina, and co-founder and Executive Director of the Kosovo Oral History Initiative.

Erion Krasniqi

Born in January 1999 in Fushe Kosova, Kosovo, Erion experienced war’s ravages firsthand. After family loss, he turned pain into a peace mission. From 2019, he’s taken steps to understand peacebuilding and reconciliation. Since 2022, he has been actively engaged in educating others, locally and internationally, fostering reconciliation and understanding of Kosovo’s history and healing through Local Peace and the Youth Peace Ambassadors Network.

Dr. Yael Danieli 

A Clinical psychologist, traumatologist, victimologist and psychohistorian, Dr. Danieli is Founder and Executive Director of the International Center for the study, prevention and treatment of MultiGenerational Legacies of Trauma; Director, Group Project for Holocaust Survivors and their Children and Past-President, International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.
