Today marks the third observation of the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, a day “intended to honour and support the victims and survivors of terrorism and to promote and protect the full enjoyment of their human rights and fundamental freedoms” (UN A/RES/72/165).
The International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) commemorates this important day by standing together in solidarity with the thousands of victims of terrorism, their families, friends and communities.
Terrorism remains a global challenge. It recognises no borders, no religion, and no ethnicity. Terrorists seek to divide our societies, instill hatred and fear, and strip individual victims of their humanity and human rights.
Working together, the international community rejects these goals, and is dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights for all and the rule of law.
On this day of remembrance, ICCT recommits to our vision of a secure world free from violent extremism, radicalisation and terrorism, where societies are protected by responses to terrorism based on human rights and the rule of law. We pledge to continue the fight against violent extremism and terrorism, to prevent radicalisation, to facilitate prosecution and to seek a measure of justice for victims and survivors. We will continue to support a victim-centred strategic approach to countering terrorism and extremism.
On behalf of all those who work at ICCT, we express our sympathy and solidarity with those who have suffered at the hands of terrorists.
Thank you,
Alexander von Rosenbach
Interim Director, ICCT
